Welcome to Adelaide Aquaponics!
At the moment we have 1 kitchen garden kit in stock so if you are after a great little kit perfect for growing herbs near the back door, get in quick. Aquaponics is the creation of a complete cycle of symbiotic relationships where the fish help plants and the plants help fish. Aquaponics uses no chemicals, requires one tenth of the water needed for field plant production and only a fraction of the water that is used for fish culture. Our October 2009 seminar was a great success. Great feedback was received regarding the presentations by Murray and Lee and all enjoyed the fresh cakes made by wife and 2 children using produce from the garden. We are now on twitter. Search for Adl_Aquaponics, we will have hints and tips for aquaponics and organic gardening, specials and announcements. We have just pulled most of the plants out of the Balcony Kit (Mar 2010) and replanted. The snake beans had taken over the pergola and the capsicums and chilli had been in there for over 12 months but just kept producing. We have also started pulling out most of the summer veg in the garden and have moved the chicken coop to the bed we grew the corn in. The bed where the chicken coop has been for the last few months looks great and hopefully we will get some good crops out of it over the next few months. We are still getting beans, including scarlet runners, eggplant, pumpkins, carrots, raspberries, some tomatoes, chillis, rainbow chard, hgeaps of herbs and grapes. Speaking of grapes, a friend offered me a heap of grenach and cab sav grapes so we now have 30 or 40 litres of wine fermenting in the garage. Going through the process has ignited my enthusiasm for making country wines with various fruits (Im not sure my wife shares this enthusiasm). It is amazing the amount of food you can produce for yourself if you are willing to give it a go. A couple of months ago we dug up our front yard and planted a couple of fruit trees, sweet corn, sunflowers, spinach, radishes pumpkin, beans and cucumber. It has been thriving and we have been harvesting cucumbers and beans like mad and looks like the corn is not far off as well as a couple of butternut pumpkins. The front yard looks even prettier covered in veggies and takes lots less work to maintain. We ate our first Jade Perch a couple of weeks ago. It was 256g, a bit small but I had been champing at the bit. I just baked it whole in foil with a bit of tomato and onion. It was lovely. We have a few that are nearly 400g now so they are looking good for the BBQ in a couple of weeks. I have found recently that the 10 Jades in the Kitchen Garden kit are growing quicker than those in the Balcony kit. Seems to be a good system at the moment for ensuring the fish come to size over a prolonged period. Dont forget to drop us an email at adelaideaquaponics@hotmail.com if you have any questions or want to arrange a visit to look at our operating aquaponics systems or our organic vegetable garden. |
